WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT CASHEWS?
Cashews are nutrient-dense, containing high amounts of copper, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, iron and vitamin K. While cashews contain slightly more fat than most nuts, this fat is almost entirely oleic acid, the same fat found in olive oil. Cashews contain zero cholesterol, plenty of protein, and little natural sugar. In short, cashews are the tastiest health food out there. Their creamy taste makes them a perfect dairy substitute, and if you’ve never tried cashew butter, then you’re in for a treat. You can add them to stir-fries, desserts or just your hand. They never cancel plans you were looking forward to. They’re great listeners. They’ve never said mean things about you behind your back. Plus, we think their crescent shape looks pretty cool. Talk about a super food!
PEANUTS ARE SUPER CHEAP. WHY ARE CASHEWS SO EXPENSIVE?
To put it simply: production costs. Each cashew is attached to an apple. Each apple is attached to a tree. These trees take a lot of time and space to grow and yield relatively few nuts compared to a peanut plant. Once the nuts are off of the apples, they need to be collected, dried, steamed and cooled to soften their hard shells. Then, the shells need to be cracked and separated from the nut. Then, the nuts need to be oven-dried to help make peeling the skin off the cashews easier. The cashews have their skins individually peeled by hand with a scalpel. Then, they are roasted, cooked, and finally, packaged. It’s a long process, but if you’ve ever tried one of our cashews, you know that the extra time and cost are totally worth it.
I DON’T SEE A “USDA ORGANIC” LABEL ON YOUR PRODUCT. ARE YOUR CASHEWS ORGANIC?
Our cashews are organic, but have no certification. In fact, the majority of Indonesian cashews are organic, as the industry is very undeveloped and farmers often times neither have the knowledge of nor access to agrochemical resources. Most cashews in Bali actually grow in the wild and farmers go around harvesting them. They are simply cashews – as nature intended.
WHAT ABOUT FAIR-TRADE AND NON-GMO?
We do not have these certifications and also don’t necessarily believe they are important. Having said that, East Bali Cashews stems from the very idea of a fair, responsible and sustainable business practices being the most effective method of bringing positive change to an impoverished and neglected region. We have a very open door policy and believe in transparency over paid certifications. So, while our cashews are both fair-trade and non-GMO, we do not believe taking on the additional cost of labeling them that way is in the best interests of our company, our community or our consumers.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE “MADE WITH LOVE”?
On each of our labels, we write that our products are “made with love.” This is more than a marketing gimmick. The cashew farmers and factory workers in Desa Ban are not just our employees. These people are our community, our neighbors, and our friends. At our factory, everyone is encouraged to share their ideas and shape the way our company moves forward. The best part? They do! Since we opened our doors in 2012, we have never had lost an employee. Our retention rate is a testament to the experience of our workers. We love what we do, and you can taste it in our products.
WHAT IS A “SOCIAL ENTERPRISE” AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM A REGULAR COMPANY?
A social enterprise functions not only to be sustainable economically, as most companies do, but environmentally and socially as well. It focuses on implementing business practices that maximize the positive impact it has on its community. East Bali Cashews sells a product just like any other company, but what makes it a social enterprise is the way it spends money on environmentally friendly equipment, livable wages, and social initiatives.
WHAT’S THE SHELF LIFE OF YOUR PRODUCTS?
Because our products are processed, cooked and packaged all in the same place, our products last significantly longer than typical cashews. While the sooner you eat our products, the fresher they will be, we do not recommend throwing away our products until after about a year. On each bag, you will find a “best before” date.
WHICH OF YOUR PRODUCTS ARE VEGAN?
Our products are 100% vegan. We are proud to call our most magical premises, the factory in Desa Ban, a place free of animal products, so our customers can snack on our entire product variety absolutely worry-free.
DO YOU USE ANY ARTIFICIAL PRESERVATIVES OR STABILIZERS IN YOUR PRODUCTS?
No way! Because our ingredients are all locally-sourced and our products are processed, cooked and packaged all in one place, we do not need to use artificial preservatives or stabilizers to keep our products fresh. In most of our bags, you will find a moisture absorber that keeps our products fresh longer. As long as you don’t eat that, you’re good to go!
ARE YOUR PRODUCTS FREE OF GLUTEN AND SOY?
There is a tiny chance that our Granola Bites and Granola contains traces of gluten, since the rolled oats we use are not certified gluten free. All our other products we can safely claim as being gluten and soy free.
